MPD: Bicyclist dies after crossing double-solid lane, crashing into oncoming car

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Maui police say a bicyclist has died after crossing over the yellow double-solid lane and colliding into oncoming traffic on Friday.
MPD officials say the incident happened around 2:30 p.m. on Haleakala Highway (Highway 378) 0.9 miles south of Mile Marker #6 in Kula.
Officials say that in a preliminary investigation, the 68-year-old male bicyclist was traveling down Haleakala Highway with a Maui Downhill riding group.
MPD says the man crossed the yellow double-solid lane markings into the oncoming lane and collided with a vehicle traveling up Haleakala Highway.
The bicyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Officials say the driver stopped to render aid and remained on the scene.
MPD says the bicyclist sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and passenger in the vehicle did not sustain any injuries.
The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol has not been determined, as the investigation is still pending.
